July 27th, 2004 San Antonio

Posted by Jay at 10:17 pm

This past weekend, I took Friday off and we drove down to San Antonio sans Nicolas (who enjoyed a couple nights with Grammy and Grandy). There we had the pleasure of witnessing the wedding of Patrick and Aubree Shay. In 1994 when I led the 7th & 8th grade Wednesday night Bible study at TNPC, Patrick was one of my finest pupils, and it has been a tremendous pleasure watching him grow up into a fine young man.

Now, there is much more to this story, particularly regarding the dessert-only reception at which my 3 year old son Jonathan got hyped up on sugar like never before and went to another plane of existence, but I mainly want to post a couple photos from Saturday, so I’ll cut to the chase. Saturday morning found us at SeaWorld, where we spent a fun-filled, hectic, hot day before driving back to Dallas that same day… in the future, we’ll spread things out a bit more! Here’s a couple of my shots that came out well.

July 26th, 2004 Abigail in the Kitchen

Posted by Tricia at 3:57 pm

Our eldest has learned a very useful skill the past month: how to make her own sandwich. Her favorite way to enjoy lunch these days involves her pulling the stepstool up to the kitchen counter where she concocts one of her peanut butter and jelly creations. The interesting thing though about Abigail’s sandwiches is that she doesn’t stop with mere peanut butter and jelly. Feeling the need for a little something more between her two slices of bread, she experiments each time with a new ingredient. So far, she’s added various types of crackers, potato chips, chinese noodles and marshmallows (at different times, not together in the same sandwich!!). She wanted to try chocolate chips one day, but I thought that was taking it a bit too far.

I am truly enjoying seeing her creativity at work, and those of you like me, with several young children at home will I’m sure concur with my amazement and delight over her being able to prepare her own lunch every once in a while!!

July 25th, 2004 The Summer of My Itch

Posted by Tricia at 9:57 pm

It would seem in poor taste for me to go missing for some time on the blog front and then return only to post a whiney-sounding entry. Please know I do not wish to give offense by the following, however, I must tell you that among the more pleasant happenings this summer there has been a nagging little issue that just won’t go away. Oh, it fades into the background for a week here and there, but then flames up again in a most frustrating way. Today though, I feel we may have reached a turning point, so I shall recount my little woe to you now that I know there will be perhaps a tinge of hope interlaced with the grumbling.

Very early in June, during our week of VBS, I began noticing a strange amount of bug bites just under my chin. Every morning I woke up to find more of these, and within a couple days, the bites were no longer limited to my chin. My soon-to-be-sis-in-law commented that my bites looked more like a case of hives and soon others indicated to me that I’d best see a medical professional for their opinion.

Well, given the busyness of our week I did not make it to the doctor’s office until a week later, where I was diagnosed with a rather severe case of poison ivy and put on a dose of steroids to deal with it. What a mess I was. And boy, did I itch!! Happily, within a few days there were no new “spots” and in another week things were clearing up pretty well. I figured the steroids did their trick and was quite grateful for modern medecine.

Unfortunately, by a week’s time after this “cure”, I found evidence that the poison ivy was not actually all gone. And each day it got a little worse than the day before. Back to the doctor’s, only this time I went to a dermatologist, thinking a specialist would surely be able to help me. He confirmed the diagnosis, but indicated that my primary physician, who wrote the first steroid prescription, did not give me a strong enough prescription to wipe out the rash. “Oh good,” I thought, “all I need is a higher dose of the pills, maybe even a shot to get things started, and I will be rid of this problem!” After all, we were only two weeks from the huge family wedding of the summer, the arrival of tons of out of town company, and many events to see to and attend. I really did not want to continue dealing with poison ivy.

However, the dermatologist felt that another dose of steroids might prove harmful to me (too many steroids = not good) so better to wait it out (what???) and use some creams and such in the meantime till it clears. This was NOT what I was looking for. But I tried to remember he was the doctor, he went to school for the degree and all, and that I needed to follow his advice.

So I went home and obediently used my creams, and kept itching. Till another week and yes, admittedly, the rash did ease up again. I was hoping this was the last of it. The weekend of the wedding arrived and oh no!! New spots began appearing, again. As I complain about this, please know that I realize my little affliction is quite minor compared to the physical ills so many in this world suffer. And yet I admit I was growing weary of itching. And treatments that didn’t seem to work.

So, last week after the wedding was over (but while my grandmother was still in town to help watch the kids for me - Thanks Grandma!!) I went back to the dermatologist with my newest spots, seeking help and yes, drugs!! He was, I’m sorry to say, less than helpful, and actually tried to send me away again with no medicine for my plight. I wanted to cry, but instead I begged him to please try one more dose of the steroids because I felt at this point the rash just wasn’t going away, and was dubious that the creams were going to do any lasting good. He finally agreed to write a prescription, but then told me to stay out of my yard for the rest of the summer and let my husband do all the gardening while I attended to the inside chores. Helpful.

While his bedside manner and overall doctoring left me wanting, his rather insensitive comment did motivate me to try and locate what might be causing this outbreak. We’d already checked our plant beds for the wicked poison ivy but had never found any. Now we asked others to look as well, hoping someone might have some experience with the actual plant, or perhaps another form of poisonous vegetation which would help us. Today, my friends, that someone appeared, and we are very grateful he did.

The hero of our story??? David C. Good friend and veteran poison ivy hunter and sufferer. And he, upon my request, looked over our front yard, and found the evil little vine, growing happily in one of our plant beds where I had ignorantly mulched just a few weeks before. In fact, I’d carefully mulched AROUND the vine, giving it an optimum environment to grow and thrive (and yes, keep aflicting me)!! HAHAHA!!

David’s discovery of the actual plant has given me hope. Because until now we really weren’t certain where I was getting this poison ivy from, or even if it was poison ivy. Now that I know what is causing my itch, I shall wisely stay far away. This afternoon my husband went out armed with massive amounts of weed killer and obliterated the poison ivy, as well as everything in and around that nasty vine, hopefully eradicating the cause of my sufferings. He has promised to continue to fight the good fight again my plant foe, in hopes of preserving me from future itchings. And he has requested that I wait until next season to replant that particular bed with English Ivy (which was my master plan, folks), just to see that the danger has passed. So I guess a project has been lifted from my task list, at least for the time being.

After five days on this newest round of prednisone, I am still itching a lot more than I’d like. But I think things are calming down. I do hope perhaps the discovery today means that ultimately we’re seeing the end of the poison ivy for this summer. But I’ll do my best to be a bit more frequent with my blogging from here on out, so at least I can keep you all informed. Thanks for reading!!

July 12th, 2004 Lord’s Prayer, Part 2

Posted by Jay at 4:32 pm

In an earlier entry, I offered some provisional thoughts regarding the Lord’s Prayer and its parallels with redemptive history. Now, I believe Jesus’ prayer is rich in references to the Lord’s work throughout history, but I was specifically intrigued by the somewhat chronological correlation of the first three clauses of the prayer. It went something like this:

Our Father: Israel called out of slavery and identified as God’s son (Exodus 4:22-23 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Exodus 4:22-23 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F02004022-02004023" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F02004022-02004023" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><p id="p02004022.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v02004022-1">22&nbsp;</span>Then you shall say to Pharaoh, &#8216;Thus says the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, Israel is my firstborn son, <span class="verse-num" id="v02004023-1">23&nbsp;</span>and I say to you, &#8220;Let my son go that he may serve me.&#8221; If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son.&#8217;&#8221; (<a href="http://www.esv.org" class="copyright">ESV</a>)</p> </div> </div>

in which Jesus is described as tabernacling among us. Whoever has seen the son has seen the Father. That sort of thing. Puts a heavy incarnational emphasis on this aspect of the prayer.

Daily Bread: The giving of manna and basic provision (i.e. their clothes did not wear out).

Here are some provisional thoughts on how this pattern might continue.

Forgive Us: I am more and more inclined to think Leviticus forms the parallel with its introduction of the sacrificial system and the associated atonement.

Deliver Us: Here I see a broad parallel with the book of Numbers and its repetitive cycle of testing, judgment, and deliverance.

Thine Is the Kingdom: The entrance into the land fits here, starting at the end of Numbers and carrying forward into Joshua. Of course, as we learn in Judges and I Samuel, the Israelites ultimately reject God as their king. But their very rejection implies the starting point was in fact the establishment of God’s as king in their midst.

Today, as I was reading the account of the baptism, it suddenly hit me that the dove fit perfectly and confirmed the correlation between the Noah story and Jesus baptism, putting Jesus in the place of the new heavens and new earth. As the waters receded, Noah sent out a raven, and it returned. Then he sent out a dove, and it returned. He sent the dove again, and it brought back an olive leaf. He sent the dove out a third time, and it did not return. One can picture the new earth breaking through the water and the dove alighting on it.

Jesus “went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him.” The dove found purchase, for the waters had receded from the new creation.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. June 27th, 2004 Jay’s Green Salsa

Posted by Jay at 5:28 pm

Some time ago, I posted an entry regarding my attempts at creating a salsa recipe (emphasis on “attempts”). Since then, I’ve had some real success, based largely on a contribution via a comment to one of those previous entries. Here’s where I’m at…

Ingredients
1 28 oz. can of whole peeled tomatoes
1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
1 tablespoon of granulated garlic
1 tablespoon of crushed red pepper
1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
1-2 jalapenos
1 1/2 teaspoons of vegetable oil
1 1/2 bunches of cilantro
1 lime (use the juice only)

Cook jalapeno(s) in boiling water until tender (perhaps 2 minutes with a steady boil), then drain. Use 1 small jalapeno with the seeds removed for mild heat, 2 whole jalapenos for intense heat. Add all the ingredients but the cilantro in a food processor and process to smooth consistency. Add cilantro and process to desired consistency.

Note: If you use “no salt added” tomatoes, you may need to add more salt.

June 20th, 2004 The Lord’s Prayer and Redemptive History

Posted by Jay at 6:16 pm

I’ve been teaching an adult Sunday School class on the vocation/identity of Jesus and the implications for the church using the Lord’s Prayer as an outline. This morning, as I was reviewing the previous week (”thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven”), I suddenly noticed a pattern that proved very helpful in summarizing the previous week.

The basic premise is that the initial clauses of the prayer line up well with Israel’s history and therefore point all the more strongly to Christ’s fulfillment of Israel’s vocation. I haven’t worked it all out, but here are some initial thoughts.

When Israel is first called as a nation, God calls them as His son (Exodus 4:22-23 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Exodus 4:22-23 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F02004022-02004023" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F02004022-02004023" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><p id="p02004022.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v02004022-1">22&nbsp;</span>Then you shall say to Pharaoh, &#8216;Thus says the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, Israel is my firstborn son, <span class="verse-num" id="v02004023-1">23&nbsp;</span>and I say to you, &#8220;Let my son go that he may serve me.&#8221; If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son.&#8217;&#8221; (<a href="http://www.esv.org" class="copyright">ESV</a>)</p> </div> </div>

)… i.e. He is their Father. This is the first reference to the fatherhood of God in redemptive history. The Israelites go into the wilderness, where Moses goes up the mountain and receives the heavenly pattern for the tabernacle (Hebrews 8:5 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Hebrews 8:5 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F58008005" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F58008005" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><p id="p58008005.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v58008005-1">5&nbsp;</span>They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. ). This tabernacle becomes the dwelling place of God. The Israelites then wind up in the wilderness for some time, during which time they are sustained by the bread of heaven, manna (Deuteronomy 8:3 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Deuteronomy 8:3 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F05008003" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F05008003" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><p id="p05008003.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v05008003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word<span class="footnote">&nbsp;<a href="#f1" id="b1" title="Hebrew 'by all'">[1]</a></span> that comes from the mouth of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>. ).

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus calls on God as Father, pointing toward his church as the people of the true exodus, the sons of God. At this point it gets interesting, because he immediately prays that “thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven”. This strikes me as a parallel to the pattern of the tabernacle, and gives the entire clause an interesting flavor. Specifically, it moves us toward an incarnational understanding of God’s kingdom being brought to bear on the earth.

Jesus “tabernacled” among us and revealed the Father to us (John 1 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>John 1 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F43001001-43001051" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F43001001-43001051" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><h3 id="p43001001.01-1">The Word Became Flesh</h3> <p class="chapter-first" id="p43001001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v43001001-1">1:1&nbsp;</span>In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. <span class="verse-num" id="v43001002-1">2&nbsp;</span>He was in the beginning with God. <span class="verse-num" id="v43001003-1">3&nbsp;</span>All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. <span class="verse-num" id="v43001004-1">4&nbsp;</span>In him was life,<span class="footnote">&nbsp;<a href="#f1" id="b1" title="Or 'was not any thing made. ). He was the ultimate heavenly pattern, revealing the Father (and His will) perfectly. As we pray the Lord’s prayer and call on God as Father, we yearn to see His kingdom brought to bear here on earth. But this is not a desire apart from us, his Church. Called by Christ, in the power of the Spirit, the bringing of the Kingdom to bear on the world is the bringing of us to bear on the world… or more accurately we should say it is the bringing of Jesus to bear through us in the power of the Spirit.

Next up then is the prayer for bread, once again paralleling Israel’s history. Here we find Jesus is the true manna, the Bread of Life. Just as the Church resonates with the Father/Son theme and the Heavenly Pattern transforming the earth, so too we have bread to seek. We see this in all areas of our lives, and certainly the Sermon on the Mount leaps to mind when we juxtapose thoughts of daily needs and the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Matthew 6:33 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F40006033" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F40006033" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><p id="p40006033.01-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v40006033-1">33&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.</span> (<a href="http://www.esv.org" class="copyright">ESV</a>)</p> </div> </div>

). But I believe the redemptive-historical parallel between manna and Jesus the Bread of Life also points us very directly toward the Lord’s Supper. Though the Lord’s Prayer doesn’t explicit point to the Supper, and I wouldn’t want to limit its application to Communion, the association is not unwarranted. This very connect-the-dots sort of movement through redemptive history is seen in 1 Corinthians 10 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>1 Corinthians 10 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F46010001-46010033" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F46010001-46010033" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><h3 id="p46010001.01-1">Warning Against Idolatry</h3> <p id="p46010001.04-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v46010001-1">10:1&nbsp;</span>For I want you to know, brothers,<span class="footnote">&nbsp;<a href="#f1" id="b1" title="Or 'brothers and sisters'">[1]</a></span> that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, <span class="verse-num" id="v46010002-1">2&nbsp;</span>and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, <span class="verse-num" id="v46010003-1">3&nbsp;</span>and all ate the same spiritual food, <span class="verse-num" id="v46010004-1">4&nbsp;</span>and all drank the same spiritual drink. Now, I’ve only gotten this far… does the pattern continue? We have drawn parallels between Israel, Jesus, and the Church for the first three clauses of the prayer (Father, Kingdom on Earth, Daily Bread). Do the parallels continue through the remainder of the prayer?

June 13th, 2004 Suppertime at the Hornes’

Posted by Tricia at 3:21 pm

Those of you out there either with small children or those of you who have raised small children will identify with the idea that many kids, though not all, have quite narrow tastes when it comes to food likes. Perhaps this is a regular part of development; I don’t know, I actually haven’t done any formal research on the topic. We here at Casa Horne have delightful children (we think!) yet they have always been “challenged” in this area. I myself was quite the finicky eater as a young child, yet as an adult I enjoy most foods put in front of me.

However, our little fussy eaters were quickly becoming difficult to the point of ill-mannered at the table. Mealtimes around here had turned into something of a battle. There was complaining, “I don’t like this!”, “I can’t swallow the food!”, “I want yogurt instead!”; general whininess, and frustration on the part of the two parents, who desperately yearned for meals to be a time of peaceful family interaction and happiness.

Jay and I finally decided something must be done. I had gotten to the point of rarely cooking foods that I knew would be turned down flat. Though I actually love to cook, I began to strongly dislike my job as the food prep person around here. And the kids certainly weren’t enjoying their meal experiences either. So, a couple of weeks ago we instituted some changes around here. I am happy to say they have been met with huge success. In the last two weeks our children have eaten foods they would never have dared to touch before this. Some of those include: yellow fin tuna, tabouli, fresh tomato, grilled mushrooms, and tomato-basil-mozzarella salad.

So, you ask, what did we do to our children?

June 10th, 2004 Regulative Principle of Worship

Posted by Jay at 5:06 pm

In debates about the Regulative Principle of Worship (RPW), arguments are often made from the form of worship given in the Old Testament. To summarize the nature of such arguments, one might say that in the Old Testament it was very clear that God was pleased by worship offered in accordance with the rather detailed prescriptions he provided, and very displeased by worship offered in any other way.

Such a view arises from many passages of scripture, but can be summarized by highlighting a couple of key passages. As one example, in Deuteronomy 12:29-32 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Deuteronomy 12:29-32 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F05012029-05012032" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F05012029-05012032" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2> <div class="esv-text"><h3 id="p05012029.01-1">Warning Against Idolatry</h3> <p id="p05012029.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v05012029-1">29&nbsp;</span>&#8220;When the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, <span class="verse-num" id="v05012030-1">30&nbsp;</span>take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, &#8216;How did these nations serve their gods?&#8212;that I also may do the same.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v05012031-1">31&nbsp;</span>You shall not worship the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.</p> <p id="p05012032.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v05012032-1">32&nbsp;</span><span class="footnote">&nbsp;<a href="#f1" id="b1" title="Ch 13:1 in Hebrew">[1]</a></span> &#8220;Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. , when commanding the Israelites to not take the form of worship used by the nations being displaced in the Land, the Lord states, “Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.” It is important to note that this statement is made explicitly with regard to worship.
