Proverbs sermon (3.1-15)

I preached this Sunday (2-6-2011):

Wisdom Sermon

A couple of oddities. I couldn’t find my ESV pulpit Bible so I used my NASB. But my notes are from the ESV. So the initial reading is slightly different.

Also, at some points the pipes started banging for some reason. Sounded like someone outside with a hammer (due to icy conditions we were not meeting in the usual sanctuary.

I recorded the sermon with a portable mp3 recorder that was put on the pulpit for me. The file was compressed so that it could be emailed to me. Not the best quality but sufficient, I think.

What if Orianthi sang an Obama v. Ron Paul song?

According to you
I’m stupid
I’m useless
I can’t do anything right

According to you
I’m not able
to decide
not allowed to use my mind
I’m a mess in distress
Can’t have a doctor whose mine
Even if it would save my life
According to you
According to you

But according to him
I’m beautiful and capable
He won’t make me follow his lead
According to him
I’m intelligent and able
Everything I need to be.
Everything is opposite
I don’t feel like stopping it
So baby tell me what I got to lose
He’s into me for everything I’m not
According to you

According to you
I can’t live
My own life
You have to lead me every place

According to you
I suck at buying cars because I don’t give the unions their pay
I’m the girl who does not spend enough
Your investment bankers get what I make
According to you
According to you

But according to him
I’m beautiful and capable
And the bankers should go broke instead.

According to him
I’m intelligent and able
Everything I need to be
Everything is opposite
I don’t feel like stopping it
So baby tell me what I got to lose
He’s into me for everything I’m not
According to you

I need to feel appreciated
like I’m not hated
Oh, no
Why can’t you see me through his eyes?
It’s too bad you’re robbing me dizz-ay

According to me
you’re stupid
you’re useless
you can’t do anything right

But according to him
I’m beautiful, incredible
He can’t get me out of his head

According to him
I’m intelligent and able
Everything I need to be.

Seeing Ascension: A Sermon on Ephesians 1.15-23

A few weeks ago we had most of our pastoral staff out of town and then the one staff minister left got seriously ill.  Saturday night I found out I was preaching.

The sermon he was planning to preach was on the resurrection and I didn’t want to have to change the Scripture readings that late.

So I preached on Ephesians 1.15-23.  I had preached on it before and thought I could simply reuse it.  But I didn’t like my notes very much and changed much of it (it was also way too long, I thought).  Anyway, this was the result.

Here’s the text of the reading with the sermon text proper in bold:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Music Monday Belated = Moody Blues

Why my missionary and devout parents introduced me to a bunch of drug music, I’ll never know :) –except that the band was really good.

First, of course, Nights in White Satin. Yes there were other videos I could have posted, but this uh stood out.

This next was probably my favorite (funny that no matter how much they say “I’m just a..” being a “rock and roll singer” comes across as messianically important).

Another favorite (video done more recently but the song goes back):

Older (I think):

Here’s a salute to amateur production values and the award for “song least understandable apart from recreational drug use” (in the culture, not the listener).

And here we have their mid-eighties comeback. The fact that the survivors stayed in such great shape leads me to suspect they were wiser than their musical culture may have been.

Quite frankly, they fit rather well into the eighties vibe. And looking at the theme related video, the primary drug being pushed was melodrama.

And then from earlier eighties while I was still in high school I think. If the speech by Justin was his idea and was included in the video, then he is more full of himself than I thought.
