I’ve read the Hobbit and LOTR repeatedly since childhood and this only recently occurred to me

The thematic predecessor to the Ring of Power in LOTR is not the Ring in the Hobbit.  It is the Archenstone.

I know.  This is what the word, “duh,” was invented for.

    It’s a duh, but you can hardly be blamed for falling for the huge misdirection. I’m still not sure whether I realized this before or after I read your post.
