Thinking fondly of James Graham right now

KidnappedSo I’m reading Kidnapped: Being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751 (Puffin Classics). And it occurs to me that Robert Louis Stevenson knew what he was doing naming the ship Covenant–the ship where David thought he was invited by a friend.  There are all sorts of ways a crew can kidnap you.  I’m thinking that Stevenson may have given the idea to John Buchan.

I am a big fan of John Buchan, and I think Witchwood may be his best novel. It is arguably his most important novel, certainly there is a body of criticism (including several works in french!) that advance this claim.

Now I have almost every one of his books (nearly 80) including his history of the Kirk. As a son of the manse & one of Scotlands most accoplished ruling elders he had a very good grasp of “how it was” as contrasted with the rose-coloured image of “how we wish it was” that is so comman among popular church histories.

That said, and knowing that it is a work of fiction, I am very suspicious that His Lordship was giving a wink toward some of the less savoury elements of our forefathers “religious” *ahem* practices.

I wonder Pastor Horne if you have considered that possibility?
