A friend just pointed out to me: What is the point of gaining the “health benefits” after the trial period? At $10 an hour a 50% contribution would mean that all your paycheck is eaten up by health insurance. What sort of competent worker would ever go for that deal?

Why would you take a job where you’d have to meet someone’s standards of competent illustration (i.e., be expected to fulfill a level of craft and be subject to criticism on the quality) if you could make the same amount of money answering the phone, preparing the packages, and doing the accounting clerking WITHOUT the graphics work? If I could take a job where all I’d have to do is basic, mindless task-oriented functions for the same amount of money as one where I’d have to do all those functions, but then the other part of my work would constantly be judged as to aesthetic quality and possibly be found wanting, it’d be a no-brainer.

Besides what you said about the health insurance.

Being competent in the use of Peachtree accounting software is also a valuable skill. You have to understand basic accounting concepts, and you have to know how Peachtree applies that. Expecting a person who is able to use either Peachtree or the graphics software to work for $10 an hour is really undervaluing either person’s worth. Finding a person who is competent in the use of both would be challenging as well.

And then cheap bast@@ds who make such offers can’t figure out why they have a very high turnover rate (a desperate person might take the job for a week or two until an actual real job came along).
