Big News

Yesterday I received my very own copy of what I am affectionately referring to as My Educational Bible in the mail. I’ve already read and re-read the library’s copy, but it is nice to have my own finally. And it will certainly be an indispensable part of our home schooling adventure this coming year. Yes, you read that right: The Hornes are going to home school next year!

After feeling conflicted about next year’s schooling plan for quite some time, it is a glorious thing to have finally made a decision. We are in no way pulling out of Covenant for lack of love – we are still crazy about our school. It is an amazing place, and we hope to be back there in the near future, but a set of complex circumstances as well as a huge change of heart as regards home schooling have led us here, and we are very excited about next year.

If I didn’t admit to being somewhat nervous about how it all happens I would be lying. But in the past several months I have discovered such a vast array of amazing resources in the Dallas area available to families who home school. The truth of the matter is that we will have to carefully pick and choose enrichment and other extras so that we actually have some down time here at home to get the basics done!!

I will certainly write more on this topic in the weeks and months to come. Those of you who have known me for some time and hear that we’ve decided to home school for a year may well think I’ve lost my marbles. So be it. I am looking at it as a way to savor some of the precious time with my children while they are still relatively young, and as an opportunity to try out some things we haven’t had time or resources to put toward in the past. We are looking forward to the journey!

  1. How exciting for you! I must admit that I am a little shocked, only because I know how much you love your school. But I’m excited for you. I love love love that book, BTW. It’s very inspiring, I think. I’ve read and re-read the library’s copy a few times myself. I don’t think homeschooling is for us at this time, but I’m looking forward to hearing how you like it and all about your schooling adventures. Sometimes, just having a definite plan (and one that you can get excited about) is worth a lot.

Let us know how it goes…

  2. I am not surprised, despite how much you love your school. You’re a natural educator, so it seems like a great decision. Congrats, and we’ll be praying it all goes well.

  3. I think you’ll enjoy it, though I will say I have days where I want to pull my hair out. We started with the same book, though we’ve moved away from some of their recommendations this year — especially the grammar book written by the authors. It taught a lot, but I was very disappointed when I realized all the poems for memorization were revised. Of course, this year has also turned into practically an unschooling year with all the renovations and travel. I’m looking forward to figuring out next year and settling into a routine again.

  4. That is very exciting! Thanks for sharing your news…I look forward to more posts on homeschooling!
I’m sure all of your children, especially Abigail, will be thrilled to spend more time with you as well.
    I’ll email you this week

  5. Great article, Chris, thanks for pointing it out. Jay liked it too.

Angie, thank you, and yes, we DO love our school…both my older kids have had STELLAR foundations there academically and in other ways too. We do hope to be back there eventually. We’ll see…

Pete, yes…we are looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Jennifer, thanks for the very kind words…I never really thought of myself that way, but I do enjoy teaching my kids…next year I am just going to jump into that love a LOT further! All prayers are appreciated and needed!

Jordana, I’m going to email you so we can dialogue more…and yes, I know there will be some truly frustrating days. But if I am honest, I have to admit that I already have those “hair pulling” days even while my kids are at school! haha!

Peggy, thanks for the encouragement…the children are REALLY excited about home schooling too.

  6. My mouth is hanging wide open…I am at my friend Kierstyn’s house and she just told me that you guys were homeschooling next year–talk about needing to call you more!!!
